The U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) is America’s development finance institution, which partners with the private sector to mobilize capital for strategic investments around the world. DFC offers loans, makes investments, provides insurance against political risks, and helps private businesses grow in other countries.

DFC products include the following:

  • Debt Financing - Direct loans and guaranties of up to $1 billion for tenors as long as 25 years
  • Equity Investments - DFC direct equity investments can provide critical support to businesses committed to addressing global challenges and advancing American strategic interests
  • Investment Funds - Support for emerging market private equity funds to help address the shortfall of investment capital
  • Political Risk Insurance - Coverage of up to $1 billion against losses due to currency inconvertibility, government interference, and political violence including terrorism. DFC also offers reinsurance to increase underwriting capacity
  • Project Development - DFC complements its finance and insurance tools with project development support for front-end engineering design work, environmental and social impact assessments, transaction structuring, and other work that will advance a project’s eligibility for further investment
Eligibility Criteria

DFC projects must meet the following criteria to be elgibile for support:

  • The project or business must be located in a country where DFC programs are available
  • DFC requires that all the projects it supports respect the environment, worker rights, human rights, and local communities, while also encouraging a positive host country impact
  • The project or business is required to generate development outcomes aligned with the agency's priorities and/or advance U.S. foreign policy goals
  • All projects DFC supports must be within the competence of the management team, and should be demonstrated by a recent, proven record of success in the same or a closely related business as evidenced by financial statements
  • DFC complements, rather than competes, with private sector lenders and supports projects that have been unable to obtain sufficient support from private lenders
