Nicaragua

Nicaragua submitted its first Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) in 2018, followed by an updated version in 2021. In September 2025, Nicaragua submitted its latest NDC.

In its latest NDC, the country commits to 65% renewable energy by 2030, a 25% reduction in gross deforestation emissions and 8–10% reduction in overall greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions compared to business as usual.

Key mitigation sectors include renewable energy, forestry, agriculture and waste, with measures to expand sustainable production, agroforestry and silvopastoral systems that integrate tree growing and livestock grazing.

Nicaragua's adaptation priorities center on food and water security, resilient infrastructure, health, biodiversity and disaster risk reduction, grounded in principles of poverty reduction, gender equality and Indigenous inclusion.

The NDC is anchored in Nicaragua’s National Climate Change Policy, which links climate action directly to poverty reduction and sustainable human development.
