Overview

Sierra Leone submitted its first Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) in 2016, followed by an updated version in 2021. Most recently, in December 2025, Sierra Leone submitted its NDC 3.0.

The country commits to reducing economy-wide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 36.2% below business-as-usual levels by 2035.

Mitigation priorities include expanding renewable energy, transitioning to clean cooking solutions, promoting electric mobility, improving waste management and restoring forests and mangroves.

Adaptation priorities include scaling climate-smart agriculture to support the Feed Salone strategy, enhancing water security and coastal resilience, strengthening health system resilience, improving infrastructure resilience and expanding disaster risk reduction

Sierra Leone’s NDC 3.0 was developed under the leadership of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change and the Environment Protection Agency (EPA-SL).

Partnership Engagement

Membership: Member since 2020
Country Engagement: Since joining the NDC Partnership, Sierra Leone has requested support related to improving coordination and whole-of-society approach. With NDC Partnership support, Sierra Leone has developed a plan for the implementation and financing of the NDC covering 11 sectors through 2023.
