Papua New Guinea

Overview

Papua New Guinea’s NDC is in line with the National Climate Compatible Development Management Policy which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 50 percent by 2030 against the 2015 baseline and to be carbon neutral by 2050. The Second NDC commits to increase level of renewables in the energy mix to 78 percent of the installed capacity, up from 30 percent in 2015. It also pledges to reduce 860 gigatons of CO2 equivalent emissions from deforestation and forest importation, and to attain a total forest carbon stock value of 17.6 billion tons CO2 by 2030. Papua New Guinea has also launched the NDC Implementation Plan covering the period of 2010 – 2030 along with the Energy Roadmap and AFOLU Roadmap. The NDC revision and implementation planning processes were supported by the NDC Partnership Climate Action Enhancement Package through partners FAO, GIZ, GGGI, IRENA, UNEP. A guiding legal and governance framework is now being formulated to utilize the Implementation Plan in sourcing international funding support.
