São Tomé and Príncipe submitted its updated NDC in 2021. The updated NDC has an emissions reduction target of 27% by 2030. The updated NDC has a broader sectoral approach covering energy, transport, fishery, agriculture, livestock farming, forestry, water, waste, civil protection, and resilience for the most vulnerable communities. The total estimated cost of NDC implementation is USD 150 million. São Tomé and Príncipe has also developed the National NDC Implementation Plan which defines objectives, results, and success indicators to measure the country's progress towards the full implementation of its NDC.

Partnership Engagement
  • Membership: member since 2016
  • Country Engagement: Since joining the Partnership, São Tomé and Príncipe has requested support related to designing or improving policies, strategies, plans, and legislation; mainstreaming NDCs into national/subnational planning and budgeting; improving the quality and ambition of the NDC; improving coordination and whole-of-society approach; designing or strengthening monitoring, evaluation, reporting, and verification (MRV systems); capacity building and knowledge products; preparation of NDC-related projects and pipelines for investment; mobilization of financial resources for NDC Investment projects; and private sector engagement to implement NDCs. With Partnership support, São Tomé and Príncipe has developed an NDC Implementation Plan covering around 10 sectors and 13 outcome areas. In addition, partners have supported various activities, including the identification, prioritization, and development of concept notes and projects to advance mitigation and adaptation actions and the installation of solar PV generators and batteries in all 45 public sector health care facilities and in the Ministry of Health’s headquarters.
