Overview

Mozambique submitted it updated NDC in 2021. The updated NDC aims to reduce emissions by approximately 40 million tCO₂eq from 2020 to 2025. The updated NDC covers energy, forestry, biodiversity, agriculture and fisheries, sustainable land use, waste management, industry, early warning systems, water resources and sanitation, health, social security, infrastructure, urban areas, settlements, tourism, coastal zones, communication, and education. The estimated cost of NDC implementation is approximately USD 7.58 billion for both adaptation and mitigation actions. Mozambique has initiated the process of preparing its LT-LEDS laying out the country's emission pathway up to 2050.

Partnership Engagement

Membership: member since 2017
Country Engagement: Since joining the Partnership, Mozambique has requested support related to designing or improving policies, strategies, plans, and legislation; mainstreaming NDCs into national/subnational planning and budgeting; improving the quality and ambition of the NDC; improving coordination and whole-of-society approach; designing or strengthening monitoring, evaluation, reporting, and verification (MRV systems); capacity building and knowledge products; preparation of NDC-related projects and pipelines for investment; mobilization of financial resources for NDC Investment projects; private sector engagement to implement NDCs; and LT-LEDS development and/or enhancement. Mozambique has updated its NDC Implementation Plan for the period 2023-2030 covering 11 sectors and 30 outcome areas. In addition, partners have supported various activities, including increasing adaptive capacities and building resilience to climate change impacts, mainstreaming climate into planning and budgeting instruments, and supporting Mozambique to become an energy transition hub in Africa.
