Burkina Faso submitted its updated NDC in 2021. The updated NDC has the enhanced ambition of reducing emissions by 29.42% by 2030 with the potential to achieve a reduction of 30.76% with the successful implementation of adaptation measures. The updated NDC covers energy, AFOLU, waste and transport sectors for mitigation and agriculture, water, environment, animal resources, habitat and infrastructure for the adaptation sectors. The overall cost of NDC implementation is USD 1.5 billion for unconditional commitments and USD 2.5 billion for conditional commitments. The NDC investment plan was developed in 2020 which includes priority investment projects for mitigation and adaptation areas identified in the country’s Partnership Plan. In 2022, Burkina Faso adopted the 2050 vision for low-carbon emission and climate resilient development.

  • Membership: member since 2018
  • Country Engagement: Since joining the Partnership, Burkina Faso has requested support related to improving coordination and whole-of-society approaches; mainstreaming NDCs into national/subnational planning and budgeting; improving the quality and ambition of the NDC Capacity building and knowledge products; preparation of NDC-related projects and pipelines for investment; and mobilization of financial resources for NDC Investment projects. With Partnership support, Burkina Faso has developed an NDC Action Plan for the period 2022-2024 covering seven sections, five being cross-cutting and two specifically addressing mitigation and adaptation activities and needs. In addition, partners have supported various activities, including mobilization of support to adaptation priorities through the Adaptation Pipeline Accelerator (APA), development of an NDC Partnership Plan and NDC Investment Plan, support to increase the participation of youth and women in the NDC update process.
