Burkina Faso
Burkina Faso submitted its first Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) in 2016, followed by an updated version in 2021. Most recently, in December 2025, Burkina Faso submitted its NDC 3.0.
Burkina Faso commits to reducing its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 22.37% below business as usual (BAU) by 2030, with an additional 8.50% conditional on international support. The NDC also sets longer-term mitigation targets of 55.23% by 2035 and 75.55% by 2050, relative to BAU.
Mitigation priorities include expanding renewable energy and improving energy efficiency, climate-smart agriculture and sustainable land management, forest conservation, restoration and agroforestry, methane reduction through improved waste and WASH systems and promoting low emission transport and electric mobility.
Adaptation priorities include water resource management, food security and resilient agri-food systems, ecosystem restoration and land degradation neutrality, climate resilient housing and urban infrastructure and strengthening health systems and climate risk management.
Burkina Faso's NDC 3.0 process was led by the Ministry of Environment, Water and Sanitation.

Climate Commitments
- Membership: Member since 2018
- Country Engagement: Since joining the Partnership, Burkina Faso has requested support related to improving coordination and whole-of-society approaches; mainstreaming NDCs into national/subnational planning and budgeting; improving the quality and ambition of the NDC Capacity building and knowledge products; preparation of NDC-related projects and pipelines for investment; and mobilization of financial resources for NDC Investment projects. With Partnership support, Burkina Faso has developed an NDC Action Plan for the period 2022-2024 covering seven sections, five being cross-cutting and two specifically addressing mitigation and adaptation activities and needs. In addition, partners have supported various activities, including mobilization of support to adaptation priorities through the Adaptation Pipeline Accelerator (APA), development of an NDC Partnership Plan and NDC Investment Plan, support to increase the participation of youth and women in the NDC update process.
