Overview

Lebanon submitted its updated NDC in 2020, increasing its unconditional emissions reduction target to 20% and conditional target to 31% as compared to the business-as-usual scenario. The updated NDC has a strong adaptation focus with priorities for strengthening agricultural resilience, sustainable use of natural resources, sustainable water services, management of terrestrial and marine biodiversity, reducing vulnerability of coastal zones, ensuring public health, and reducing disaster risk. The NDC also contains a set of financial means and enabling conditions—including capacity building, technology transfer, and costing needs assessment—to support the NDC implementation.

Partnership Engagement

Membership: member since 2019
Governance: Lebanon served as a country member to the NDC Partnership Steering Committee from 2020-2021.
Country Engagement: Since joining the Partnership, Lebanon has requested support related to designing or improving policies, strategies, plans, and legislation; mainstreaming NDCs into national/subnational planning and budgeting; improving coordination and whole-of-society approach; capacity building and knowledge products; preparation of NDC-related projects and pipelines for investment; mobilization of financial resources for NDC Investment projects; and private sector engagement to implement NDCs. With Partnership support, Lebanon has developed an NDC Action Plan covering agriculture, forestry, transportation, solid waste, and water, as well as cross-cutting climate change issues. In addition, partners have supported various activities, including the structuring of Lebanon Green Investment Facility (LGIF), strengthening farmers resilience to climate change, and the implementation of the recommendations of the Renewable Energy Outlook report.
