The Global Mechanism (GM) of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) is the operational entity that supports countries in mobilizing technical and financial resources to implement the Convention and achieve Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) and drougth resilience. It provides technical and financial assistance to help country Parties design and scale up investments, promote innovative financing mechanisms, and strengthen partnerships. The GM also plays a critical role in fostering synergies among the Rio Conventions by promoting integrated multisectoral approaches in project preparation that align sustainable land and water management practices with climate action and biodiversity conservation.
- Eligible Countries
Support is available to developing country Parties of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). - Areas of Action
Activities should be aligned with the mandate of the UNCCD, contribute to Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) targets, and/or demonstrate potential synergies with at least one of the other Rio Conventions—climate change (UNFCCC) or biodiversity (CBD). - National Ownership
Engagement of national governments is essential. The involvement of UNCCD National Focal Points in the project preparation process is strongly encouraged. Pre-identification of a potential funding window or partner is desirable to facilitate project alignment and resource mobilization. -
Stage of Support
The Global Mechanism can provide technical and/or financial assistance at various stages of project preparation, including:- Pre-concept note
- Concept note
- Full project proposal
- Pre-feasibility studies
Examples of areas of support during project preparation:
- Land degradation studies and land use/land cover mapping
- Environmental and Social Management Plans (ESMPs)
- Feasibility assessments
- Vulnerability assessments (e.g., climate, social, economic)
- Gender gap analyses and gender action plans
- Best practices, case studies, and hotspot identification
- Value chain analyses related to land-based sectors
- Assessments of innovative finance mechanisms and private sector engagement potential
- Landscape and ecosystem assessments
- Investment planning and costing exercises
- Other technical studies necessary for project development
