To support governments and international institutions in their commitments under the three Rio Conventions, namely the UNFCCC and its Paris Agreement, the CBD and the UNCCD, FAO began developing a new generation of tools in 2020: (i) the Nationally Determined Contributions Expert Tool (NEXT) - designed to help governments, national experts and practitioners assess the mitigation potential of their policies, actions and mitigation plans under their nationally determined contributions (NDC) and their long-term strategies (LTS) and contribute to the greenhouse gas emission reduction of their economies, and (ii) the Adaptation, Biodiversity and Carbon Mapping Tool (ABC-Map).
The Adaptation, Biodiversity and Carbon Mapping Tool (ABC-Map) is a geospatial app based on Google Earth Engine that holistically assesses the environmental impact of national policies and plans (NDC, NAPs, etc.) and investments in the agriculture, forestry, and other land use change (AFOLU) sector. The app is aligned with the objectives of the three Rio Conventions: United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). ABC-Map helps project designers and policy makers to measure the potential impacts of their projects and policies on biodiversity and carbon stock while at the same time understand their exposure to climate change risks.
