This guidebook seeks to ensure that forthcoming community-based adaptation (CBA) projects contribute to the achievement of gender equality and women’s empowerment by integrating a gendered perspective into CBA programming and project design. In the first two sections after the introduction, the gender approach to development is introduced and the need for adaptation, focusing on CBA, is examined. Section 4 explains the relevance of a gendered approach to adaptation by linking the concepts of gender and vulnerability to climate change, highlighting how gender affects the vulnerability of men and women in the face of incremental climate change and extreme events. Section 5 establishes the relationship between gender and climate change adaptation, highlighting the need to mainstream gender into adaptation initiatives, and then focuses on the use of gender analysis as a tool throughout the project cycle to achieve this aim. This is followed by a series of lessons learned from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Programme and the UNDP-GEF Community-Based Adaptation Programme.
The Guidebook will be useful for any community-based practitioners who wish to review successful cases of gender mainstreaming in community-based adaptation projects, but by providing simple tools and practical advice on how to take a gender-sensitive approach to planning and implementing adaptation projects and programs regardless of context, it will be a useful reference for any development practitioners or policymakers working in this field.
