Approaches for Gender Responsive Urban Mobility provides the rationale and concrete steps for the integration of gender in transport policy and planning within the urban context. There have been a number of developments within the international policy agenda over the past few years that should help to accelerate the planning and implementation of sustainable transport and the empowerment of women, including the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement, the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, and the New Urban Agenda (NUA) agreed at HABITAT III in Quito in 2016. However, several challenges for gender equality in the transportation sector, such as safety, differences in travel patterns, social norms inhibiting certain travel options, and less access to access to economic opportunities remain inadequately considered in policy and planning.
Concrete steps for gender responsive planning in transportation, such as assessing specific cultural contexts and mobility behavior and designing gender responsive solutions, are outlined with specific tools and recommendations and are followed by a selection of good practices. Recommendations for implementation, such as Gender Action Plans, ensure equitable results of transportation policy through specific actions and established baselines for monitoring outputs and outcomes.
