The Gambia Launches NDC Implementation Plan 2021-2030 Advancing Transformative Climate Action
The Republic of The Gambia launches its NDC Implementation Plan 2021-2030 , operationalizing its NDC and advancing long-term, transformative climate action.
Banjul, The Gambia, 24 July 2024 — The Republic of The Gambia launched its 2021-2030 NDC Implementation Plan to operationalize its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) at an event officiated by the Vice President of the Republic of The Gambia, H.E. Mr. Muhammed B.S. Jallow, along with key government representatives, development partners and national stakeholders. The Implementation Plan covers critical sectors, including agriculture, buildings, energy, industry, water, waste and crosscutting areas, such as policy, legislative and institutional review and development, budget and investment, gender, youth and capacity building.
The plan serves as a tool to enhance coordination and climate finance mobilization, demonstrating the government’s commitment to driving transformational economic growth in line with the Recovery Focused National Development Plan spanning 2023-2027.
In his remarks, Vice President H.E. Mr. Muhammed B.S. Jallow said: "Today marks a significant milestone in The Gambia's journey, towards a sustainable and resilient future, as we gather to launch our Nationally Determined Contribution Implementation Plan. This momentous occasion is not merely a ceremonial event; rather, it symbolizes our nation's unwavering commitment to fighting climate change and securing a sustainable and prosperous future for all. The successful implementation of the NDC requires both domestic and international financing, as well as the active participation and collaboration of all stakeholders."
"We are not exempt from the impacts of climate change," said Hon. Rohey John-Manjang, the Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Natural Resources (MECCNAR). "The NDC Implementation Plan is a roadmap that will dictate the political will in advancing climate change in five critical sectors: energy, transport, waste management, land use, land use change, forestry and agriculture.” Hon. John-Manjang emphasized the importance of development partners and ministries towards the successful implementation of the Plan, while highlighting the important role of the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs and the MECCNAR in resource mobilization.
“Despite being among the lowest emitters of greenhouse gas emissions, The Gambia is globally recognized for having one of the most ambitious NDCs, and for being among the first countries in Sub-Saharan Africa to submit its Long-Term Climate-Neutral Development Strategy for 2050 to the UNFCCC Secretariat,” said NDC Partnership Global Director Pablo Vieira. “Today, we are witnessing another transformative action-oriented tool: The Gambia’s NDC Implementation Plan 2021-2030. This dynamic document adopts an integrated whole-of-economy, whole-of-society approach towards translating The Gambia's 2030 climate commitments, provides a results-based approach to coordinating climate action by capturing ongoing activities, tracking and reporting, and serves as a powerful national blueprint for investments in climate-development action by aligning country needs with partner resources.”
Since 2019, NDC Partnership members and partners, including UNDP, ICLEI, IRENA, UNICEF, the United Kingdom and 2050 Pathways Platform, among others, have worked with The Gambia to support NDC implementation. This includes assisting with The Gambia’s 2021 NDC update process, providing technical capacity through an embedded In-Country Facilitator and Climate Finance Advisor and developing the NDC Implementation Plan 2021-2030. The NDC Partnership will continue mobilizing support for the priorities, programs and projects outlined in The Gambia's implementation plan and for its NDC 3.0 update through the NDC Partnership’s Global Call for NDCs 3.0 & LT-LEDS.
