As cities lead on implementing bold and ambitious climate actions, it is crucial that the voices and perspectives of young people are brought into their decision-making processes. Young people have been at the forefront of the global climate movement and are powerful advocates – often great at building wider public and political support – and can make excellent allies to cities with ambitious goals.
This toolkit is designed to assist cities in establishing youth climate councils (YCCs) or equivalent platforms that enable young people to meaningfully participate and contribute to city led climate action. It includes step-by-step guidance on how to establish and maintain a youth climate council, insight into how similar youth participation mechanisms have worked on local and national levels as well as links to additional resources aimed at supporting cities to deliver inclusive and equitable climate action.
