Inputs Needed
The specific methodology and input data used to calculate the mitigation potential will vary among pathways, but all adhere to the core principles of natural climate solutions. Each spatial datasets presented here estimate the mitigation potential of Natural Climate Solution activities derived from original geospatial analysis using the latest satellite and peer-reviewed datasets of current land systems, varied geospatial data, and carbon emissions/sequestration estimates informed by a review of peer-reviewed publications.
Outputs Provided
Naturebase will continue to evolve with new features and additional datasets. The current beta version includes accurate data for 18 out of 25 natural climate solutions pathways and activities, including:
Reforestation
Avoided Forest Conversion
Reduced Impact Logging for Climate Mitigation (RIL-C)
Reduced Woodfuel Harvest in Forests (RWF)
Reduced Woodfuel Harvest in Savannas (RWS)
Savanna burning
Increased Soil Carbon in Grazing Lands
Feed Management and Additives
Grassland Restoration (GrR)
Silvopasture
Trees in Croplands
Rice Cultivation
Cover Crops
Biochar
Reduced Tillage
Mangrove Protection
Mangrove Restoration
Peatland Restoration (PeR)
Additional data on mitigation potential for avoided shrubland conversion (ASC), avoided grassland conversion (AGC), avoided peatland drainage (APC), seagrass protection, saltmarsh protection, seagrass restoration, and saltmarsh restoration will be released soon. Whilst all pathway data available now is accurate to the indicated level of certainty, global and national totals for mitigation potential may increase as new pathways are included.

Naturebase is an interactive platform that brings together science-based data on nature’s pathways to benefit the climate by showing where, why and how to implement high-integrity nature-based projects with the highest carbon mitigation impact whilst improving livelihoods and protecting biodiversity.
Backed by peer-reviewed scientific data, the application shows users the emissions reduction potential for each pathway - everywhere on the planet. This is complemented with information on ecosystem and human benefits, enabling policies and case studies to support effective decision-making and high-integrity climate action.
