COP29: Turning the Tide - Translating Ocean-Climate Ambition into Action
This event will showcase tools, case studies, and best practices to enhance the role of marine nature-based solutions in climate change mitigation and adaptation.
The next round of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) represents a critical opportunity to translate growing ocean-climate ambition in UNFCCC into tangible action ahead of COP30, complementing efforts to halt and reverse biodiversity loss under the Kunming Montreal Biodiversity Framework. This event aims to assist states in strengthening their national commitments by providing a space for policy makers to connect with and learn from peers and a variety of sources of expertise. It will showcase tools, case studies, and best practices to enhance the role of marine nature-based solutions in climate change mitigation and adaptation.
Background
The next round of updates for NDCs are due by February 2025. The Global Stocktake outcome urges countries to submit revised NDCs before COP30 in Brazil in 2025 with more ambitious 2030 targets and new targets for 2035. It also highlighted the importance of Partes strengthening ocean-based action for adaptation and mitigation.
Participants at the UNFCCC Ocean and Climate Change Dialogue in Bonn in June also highlighted the window of opportunity to enhance the use of marine nature-based solutions in the next year, both through NDCs and through alignment of national actions across the Paris Agreement and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. They also stressed the need for these actions to be on based on the best available science and supported by the mobilization of resources from public and private sectors.
Support for Parties to turn ocean action ambitions into reality is growing. The aim of the event is to raise awareness of what is available and what best practice looks like, providing a space for connecting decision makers with peers and sources of support.
