COP29: Energy Transition in Developing Countries - implementation and financing dynamics
Developing countries are making strides towards a low carbon development path. Their paths significantly deviate from those of the more developed economies, due to their unique peculiarities. Uganda’s Energy Transition Plan (ETP) frames the energy sector development needed for economic transformation and universal energy access for a sustainable, affordable, and secure future. The ETP articulates a realistic, yet ambitious scenario for Uganda’s energy development and economic transformation, using the country’s local resources as well as providing the ground work for Uganda’s an Integrated Resource Plan (IRP). The plan, which was developed under a partnership between MEMD and IEA, provides a roadmap for Uganda’s energy industries to engage with investors on the much needed efforts to increase energy access and clean energy investments in Uganda. The In-Depth Review (IDR), launched 10 November 2023, served as a situational analysis for the Energy Transition Plan. It provides a comprehensive analysis of the current energy situation in Uganda with an overview of the existing policies in the energy sector and provides recommendations for the government that have been taken into account when developing the ETP. The ETP was launched on 5th December 2023 at the COP 28 in Dubai UAE. Uganda has had a 1 year of implementation and some significant progress. The country has also embarked on development of an Integrated Resource Plan (IRP). Scope of the event The event, organised by the Ugandan Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (MEMD) aims to present Uganda's In-Depth Review and Energy Transition Plan (ETP) which outlines a realistic yet ambitious pathway for Uganda's energy transition and economic development, leveraging the nation's local resources, building on the recommendations of the IDR. The event will present the progress so far made and especially with regarding to the critical objectives of the ETP, and the financing so far achieved. The event seeks to address challenges, foster collaboration, and promote sustainable energy solutions aligned with global climate goals. Participants will explore how the IDR and ETP contribute to developing countries paths towards a greener and more resilient future, using the case of Uganda.
Objectives of the event
1) To present the pathway outlined in the Energy Transition Plan
2) To present the progress made in the implementation of the ETP
3) To foster collaboration and create synergies within and across borders for energy transition
