COP29: Advancing Iraq's Climate Ambitions: Strategic Support and Future Pathways for NDC Implementation
This side event aims to emphasize the support that Iraq has received, investigate the future assistance that will be necessary for the implementation of the NDC, and share the lessons that have been learned from other countries.
In January 2022, the Republic of Iraq became a member of the NDC Partnership, representing a substantial development in its efforts to address climate change and accomplish its obligations under the Paris Agreement. Iraq's engagement with the Partnership resulted in the appointment of two focal points from the Ministries of Environment and Planning, as well as participation in the Basra Climate Conference and a pre-scoping mission. Establishing an NDC technical committee also ensured a coordinated response to climate action.
It is at a critical juncture as Iraq prepares to implement the next iteration of its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC). This side event aims to emphasize the support that Iraq has received, investigate the future assistance that will be necessary for the implementation of the NDC, and share the lessons that have been learned from other countries.
Objectives:
- Rise Ambition of Iraq’s climate interventions and priorities.
- Highlight support mechanisms and opportunities, such as the Global Call on NDCs,
LT-LEDS, and Climate Investment Planning and Mobilization Framework. - Share lessons learned from other NDCP member countries and discuss strategies for
overcoming obstacles to NDC implementation. - Encourage collaboration among climate partners to enhance the effectiveness of
NDC implementation in Iraq.
