COP28: Launch of Nigeria’s Long-Term Low Emission Development Strategy
Nigeria has elaborated the Long-Term Low Emission Development Strategy (LT-LEDS). The LT-LEDS builds on the initial 2050 Long-Term Vision for Nigeria (LTV 2050) submitted to UNFCCC in 2021 at COP26 by the Nigerian Government. It also builds on the net-zero carbon by 2060 pledge made by the President of Nigeria at Glasgow COP26 and the country’s innovative Climate Act of 2021 with a commitment to carbon neutrality between 2050-2070. The process for the development of the LT-LEDS involved the development of different scenarios and pathways for attaining these deep decarbonization pledges and the macro-economic implications for the country. The process involved extensive national conversations with diverse key stakeholders and provided adaptation options based on relevant macroeconomic modelling that align with national development needs.
The LT-LEDS translated the vision for a low-carbon and climate-resilient country into measurable and implementable strategies. The LT-LEDS is envisaged to help the country meet its international climate commitments with appropriate actions and encourage flows of international finance aligned with climate objectives from bilateral and multilateral investors and donors. On 14th November 2023, a cross-section of the Nigerian populace and international partners validated the LT-LEDS final report. At COP 28 in Dubai, the Nigerian Government will launch the final Nigeria LT-LEDS.
