COP16: Country platforms for Nature Safety, Climate Action and Sustainable Development (Invite Only)
The period of 2024-25 is a pivotal moment in advancing global dialogues on climate action, biodiversity, and reforming the international financial system as we approach 2030.
The need for reforms during 2024-25 has highlighted the inadequacies of the current global financial architecture in addressing contemporary climate and development challenges. Progress on climate, nature, and development at the country level is lagging, with NDCs insufficient to meet Paris Agreement goals. National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plans (NBSAPs) are still being developed, while Just Energy Transition Partnerships (JEPTs) remain isolated and imperfect efforts. Long-term instruments like Long-Term Low Emission Development Strategies (LT-LEDS) have failed to become integral to country planning under the UNFCCC, often hindered by financing issues and low institutional capacity for implementing large-scale transformational programs.
Despite the existence of policy instruments aimed at a just, livable, and diverse future in developing countries, these efforts face significant implementation challenges. Limited fiscal space and widespread institutional weaknesses are becoming more prominent, hindering project structuring capacity and public resource availability. Building citizen and investor confidence is crucial to overcoming these obstacles.
