Brazil to Assume Role of Co-Chair of the NDC Partnership in January 2025
Beginning in January 2025, the Government of Brazil will step into the Co-Chair position of the NDC Partnership, assuming the seat currently held by the Republic of Rwanda.
New York, United States, 26 Sept. 2024 — In January 2025, the Government of Brazil will step into the role of Co-Chair of the NDC Partnership, taking over the seat currently occupied by the Republic of Rwanda, chaired by Dr. Valentine Uwamariya, Minister of Environment.
The government made the announcement when putting forward their vision for climate leadership at the high-level event, “Roadmap to Mission 1.5: Driving the Next Generation of Climate Action and Ambition,” convened by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) COP Presidencies Troika on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly.
The Troika of UNFCCC COP Presidencies — the United Arab Emirates, the Republic of Azerbaijan and Brazil — is convening Parties to the Paris Agreement and other stakeholders to drive greater ambition in the next round of climate pledges, or Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), due in early 2025. The high-level event in New York was part of the “Roadmap to Mission 1.5,” a coordinated effort by the Troika to strengthen international cooperation in raising global climate action and ambition as incoming and outgoing Presidencies.
“In line with the spirit of Mission 1.5, Brazil is happy to announce its membership of the NDC Partnership Steering Committee, which we will be co-presiding over in 2025,” said Brazil’s Ambassador André Aranha Corrêa do Lago.
The NDC Partnership, as a global coalition of developed and developing countries, major international institutions and non-state actors, is guided by a Steering Committee of developed and developing countries and international institutions. Two Country Members serve as Co-Chairs, one from a developed country and one from a developing country. Co-Chairs provide political leadership, guidance and oversight to elevate and direct the collective work of the membership. The Republic of Rwanda currently shares the Co-Chairship with the Government of the Kingdom of Denmark, represented by the Minister for Climate, Energy and Utilities Lars Aagaard.
As Co-Chair, Brazil will steer the NDC Partnership coalition of more than 130 countries and nearly 100 institutions working toward more ambitious and urgent climate action that drives sustainable development globally.
