Raising Ambition through Partnership: Integrating Just Transition in NDCs 3.0
The Raising Ambition through Partnership webinar series highlights successful examples of mitigation and adaptation ambition-raising efforts while promoting exchange and learning to scale impact across the NDC Partnership.
There is a critical gap between the urgent need to move to low-carbon, climate-resilient economies, and the skills, decent work, green jobs, and social protections required to do so in a just and equitable manner. Mainstreaming just transition elements into the NDCs and associated climate action helps countries facilitate a holistic approach to more effective and equitable climate policies that prioritize social elements alongside emissions reductions, scaling effective NDC development, planning, implementation, and mobilizing finance for the benefit of all.
In recent years, the concept of a just transition has been steadily gaining traction as a key topic within the climate action space. A little over two thirds of the last round of NDCs included references to just transition and more than two thirds referred to employment issues. This points to a growing recognition of the importance of working on the links between climate, economic and social goals. NDCs 3.0 provide a crucial vehicle to do that by signaling high level commitment to just transition and can serve to lay out ways in which such commitments can be translated into action.
This webinar aims to bring partners together to exchange experiences on addressing just transition in their NDCs and discuss how the NDC Partnership, including through the International Labour Organization (ILO) and other members, can better assist countries in their efforts to design climate action with decent work and social justice.
