Nationally Determined Contributions in 2025 – Shaping the next round of NDCs
2025 will mark a pivotal moment in the global effort to combat climate change and a critical juncture of the Paris Agreement. As per Article 4.9 of the Paris Agreement, Parties are requested to submit new nationally determined contributions (NDCs) every five years, which are to be informed by the outcomes of the Global Stocktake (GST). 2025 then is the year when Parties to the Paris Agreement are anticipated to submit their new second NDCs with a timeframe for implementation till 2035, thus making the lead-up to the midpoint of this critical decade a key opportunity enhance ambition and accelerate implementation to enable the achievement of the Paris Agreement.
The technical phase of the first GST has highlighted that global emissions are not consistent with what the science tells us and that there is a rapidly narrowing window to raise ambition and implement existing commitments in order to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement. As the next round of NDC submissions approaches, there is a need to advance pathways towards, more ambitious mitigation targets, increased resilience, enhanced means of implementation and support, greater transparency, and accelerated implementation.
Significant progress has been made on both enhancing ambition, resilience, and accelerating implementation across the world, across mitigation, ambition and means of implementation. However, to accelerate the transition and increase resilience at the scale and speed required to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement, especially with a view to the submission of the next round of NDCs in 2025, it is critical to plan now and put in place innovative and efficient approaches to connect country priorities and related support needs with targeted and equally ambitious expertise, finance and technical assistance.
Objectives
This side-event will:
- Bring together Parties and development partners to share their experience in the development of NDCs and highlight opportunities and success stories with an eye on 2025 NDCs.
- Discuss enablers such as more robust policy frameworks, financing mechanisms, capacity-building, international cooperation, in support of the preparation of more ambitious 2025 NDCs which are informed by the GST.
- Facilitate exchanges on how to structure needs identification and coordination of support along with development partners. Highlight the support opportunities available to developing country Parties in the lead-up to 2025, aligned with the Paris Agreement towards the enhancement of ambition and the acceleration of implementation through their NDCs.
- Engage and bring together a diverse group of stakeholders, including representatives from parties and development partners, to foster meaningful dialogue and collaboration with a view to exchanging and sharing innovative ideas and solutions for shaping more ambitious 2025 NDCs.
