The NDC synthesis report released before COP27 found that current commitments of Parties’ submitted NDCs will increase emissions by 10.6 per cent by 2030, compared to 2010 levels, an improvement from last year’s assessment. The analysis showed that while emissions are no longer increasing after 2030, they are still not demonstrating the rapid downward trend science says is necessary this decade. The 2023 NDC synthesis report will also be published on 14 November. On the other hand, Global Stocktake (GST1) establishes a process for collective progress on what Parties have made towards achieving the objectives of the Paris Agreement and its long-term goals. GST1 has identified an ambition and implementation gap in as far current climate action plans are concerned. Various research institutions have also augmented this challenge therefore making it imperative that similar challenges don’t replicate as heard towards 2025.

UN Climate Change Regional Collaboration Centers undertook a study in Africa, Asia and the Pacific to understand the baseline, challenges and opportunities countries can leverage on and lessons learnt in the development and implementation of existing NDCs. As such, a side event has been organized to share practices and experiences on benefits, gaps, and constraints in developing and implementing NDCs building up to the next NDC revision cycle.

Objectives of the event

  • The event organized by the UNFCCC secretariat and its Regional Collaboration Centres seeks to share results of NDC/LEDS landscape study report in Africa, Asia and the Pacific that unpacks the state of play, challenges, opportunities for their development and implementation. It will also share practices and experiences on benefits, gaps, and constraints in developing and implementing NDCs in a build up to the next revision cycle in 2025.
