As Chair of the Coalition of Atoll Nations on Climate Change (CANCC) at COP30 to share experiences, challenges, and best practices among low-lying atoll nations in sustainable management and resilience building of coastal protection measures in the face of climate change.

Background

The low-lying atoll nations face extreme vulnerability to the impacts of climate change, including sea level rise, coastal erosion, land loss, groundwater salinisation, and extreme weather events.

The Maldives, as Chair of the Coalition of Atoll Nations on Climate Change (CANCC), emphasizes the urgent need to support atoll nations in implementing effective coastal protection measures.

This event will provide a platform for CANCC states to exchange knowledge and best practices to address key issues.

CANCC brings together:

  • Kiribati
  • Maldives
  • Marshall Islands
  • Tokelau
  • Tuvalu

These five low-lying atoll nations are working together to strengthen their collective response.

In support, the Asian Development Bank launched the Triple A initiative “Accelerating Atoll Adaptation,” a strategic program developed to help the atoll nations—Kiribati, Maldives, Marshall Islands, and Tuvalu. The Triple A initiative aims to:

  • Bolster adaptation planning
  • Strengthen infrastructure resilience to the impacts of climate change
  • Build local capacities
  • Promote sustainability
