COP29: Integrating Just Transition into NDC 3.0-learning from country experiences and UN/partner support

This side event seeks to discuss national experiences in addressing just transition in Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and highlight the UN system's  and partners’ collective efforts in supporting countries to integrate just transition into the third generation of  NDCs (NDC3.0).  

The climate crisis disproportionately affects vulnerable workers, communities and enterprises and climate action has far-reaching implications for the world of work. Ensuring a just transition those leaves no one behind is central to achieving both climate and social goals. The session will bring together key actors from across the UN system, member states and development partners to discuss learnings, tools, and collaborations to strengthen the just transition component of NDC3.0. 

The event will reflect on country examples and showcase integrated efforts of UN agencies and partners to embed just transition principles in climate action, particularly in the development and implementation of NDC3.0. It will provide a platform to share best practices, discuss the challenges, and highlight lessons learnt that can foster a meaningful integration of just transition in NDCs.  

The event will seek to address the following questions. 

• How has a just transition been addressed in the past rounds of NDCs? What are important learnings in terms process and tools? 

• What are current efforts by the UN and partners in terms of providing coherent support in NDC enhancement? How are just transition aspects factored in in such support? 

• What can be done in terms of strengthening the financing aspect of just transition commitments in NDCs?
