The world is way off track to meet the Paris Agreement’s goals to limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius and adapt to climate change impacts. Urgent action is needed to slash global emissions by 42% 2030 and 57% by 2035, accelerate countries’ adaptation efforts, and transform global food systems — which currently account for 30% of GHG emissions and 80% of deforestation.

Since the last round of NDCs, countries have agreed to a wave of new commitments, including the Glasgow Climate PactSharm-el Shiekh Adaptation Agenda, and the Emirates Declaration on Sustainable Agriculture, Resilient Food Systems, and Climate Action. They also agreed to transition away from fossil fuels at COP28. Yet, in the absence of NDC commitments that match the scale of the challenge, climate impacts continue to escalate. Next-generation NDCs — due in 2025 — are a critical opportunity to put things back on track for people, nature and planet.

For new NDCs to drive progress to 1.5 degrees C, address adaptation and resilience, and transform our food systems, it will require a truly integrated approach. They’ll need to include more specific, costed, implementation-ready adaptation measures that align with National Adaptation Plans (NAPs); bolder emission-reduction targets; and integrate both the demand- and supply-side measures for food system transformation. With preparation of new NDCs underway, this high-level event will bring together a panel representing several regions, who will discuss how they’re aligning cross-cutting objectives within their NDCs.
