The lack of adequate progress toward reaching climate goals creates a sense of urgency to identify effective solutions that can be rapidly implemented and scaled to accelerate impact. As a catalyst for change, skills development plays a key role in shaping a Just Transition to a Green Future. Of the 183 NDCs, two thirds recognize the relevance of skills development, however only 40% include implementation plans; 20% do not include skills development at all. A renewed focus on green skills development linked to the achievement of the NDCs represents a big opportunity to accelerate near-term change. We propose to convene a High-Level panel, including government leaders, multilateral institutions, climate-engaged youth, climate change leaders, private sector representatives and donors, who will discuss and set up the stage for the creation of a High Ambition Coalitionon Workforce and Skills Development for a Climate-Adapted and Green Economy. This Coalition will draw global attention to the key relevance of the education and skills development sectors to propel the current and future workforce into the green transformation, thereby supporting both climate action and employment.
