Details

The Paris Agreement ambitions require a decarbonized energy sector. SF6 gas used in electricity grids has a GWP 23,500 higher than CO2 and its emissions are rising steadily with electrification and grid extension. Many countries lack SF6 inventories and do not include this F-gas in the NDCs. Lack of policies, incentives and coordination are impeding the transition to SF6-free technologies despite commercial viability. This event aims to increase visibility of SF6 impacts and alternatives and provides recommendations on the steps for SF6 phase-out.
