COP28: Coordinating National Responses on Climate and Nature - NDCs and NBSAPs Alignment
Natural systems play a central role in regulating the climate: land, oceans and freshwater, absorbing over 50% of man-made emissions. Ecosystems also provide broader benefits including climate resilience, essential goods and services, and livelihoods and wellbeing. Ahead of 2025, Parties to the Paris Agreement and the Global Biodiversity Framework must plan actions at the national level to implement each respective global agreement, aiming to strengthen the role of nature. Thus far, these processes have been understood to be undertaken independent of each other. However, science and policy developments have been clear on how the climate, biodiversity and development crisis are interrelated. In this critical decade, Parties cannot afford to compromise progress through strategies in one area that increase risks in another. As COP28 leads Parties on collective stocktaking, this event will explore how countries can plan and implement for climate and biodiversity conservation in a coordinated manner. This high level event will explore approaches for both NDC and NBSAP enhancement; and Parties can consolidate and coordinate these efforts. The experiences in biodiverse rich countries can provide a blueprint for how to implement these actions and NDC partnership countries from the diverse regions will join to illustrate this in practice.
