Climate Action
The NDC Partnership supports climate and development action by powering a collaborative, member-driven response, including tailored expertise, technical assistance, and funding to support countries in the implementation and enhancement of their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). Our climate action is governed by the Paris Agreement. This means that:
- We support countries efforts towards adaptation and mitigation.
- Mitigation action should be consistent with the Paris Agreement goal of limiting warming to well below two degrees centigrade and pursue efforts towards 1.5 degrees centigrade as compared to pre-industrial levels.
- Adaptation action aims to increase countries’ abilities to adapt to the adverse impacts of climate change, and to foster resilience and low-carbon development, while preserving food security.
- Finance flows should be consistent with a pathway towards low greenhouse gas emissions and climate-resilient development.
In 2015, the world endorsed the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. These historic accords presented countries with an unprecedented opportunity to align climate and sustainable development agendas to spur economic growth and improve the livelihoods of all people. To signal their commitments to the Paris Agreement, nations submit their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs)—each country's strategy to cut its own greenhouse gas emissions and build resiliency against the negative effects of a changing climate—on a cycle every five years.
One of the Partnership’s guiding principles is to align the climate and development agendas. This link is spelled out in our Theory of Change, which connects the Paris Agreement’s implementation and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, as well as the Addis Agenda on financing for sustainable development.
The NDC Partnership is built on the premise of collective action: by acting together, we achieve more.
