Netherlands Announces EUR 10 Million Contribution to Support Countries Addressing Water Challenges
The Government of the Netherlands has committed EUR 10 million to the NDC Partnership to support countries in addressing water sector-specific challenges in the implementation of their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
18 Nov. 2025, Belém, Brazil — The Government of the Netherlands has committed EUR 10 million to the NDC Partnership to strengthen countries’ enabling conditions for climate and development actions at the nexus of water and climate. This contribution builds on previous funding from the Netherlands to the NDC Partnership, which supported countries with integrating water into the development and implementation of their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
The water sector is a major — yet often overlooked — opportunity for climate action. Building resilient, efficient water systems is vital for both mitigation and adaptation. Countries can cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through smart water management and infrastructure, while strengthening resilience to floods and droughts by protecting and restoring natural water systems, such as wetlands.
This five-year contribution, announced during COP30, will help the NDC Partnership scale targeted technical assistance for countries to plan and implement national actions at the intersection of water, energy, food and climate.
With these funds, the NDC Partnership will deploy coordinated support to address country needs, from developing investment plans and pipelines to strengthening legislative and policy frameworks and building capacity and consensus on water-related issues.
Vice Minister for Development Cooperation of the Netherlands Steven Collet: “Water management, future-proof agriculture and renewable energy are increasingly interconnected — a positive trend that puts us firmly on the path to green growth. Yet climate action in the water sector is not yet at the scale and pace it should be. The Netherlands is deepening its support for the NDC Partnership to catalyze action across countries. Together, we must keep our focus on accelerating implementation across all sectors.”
NDC Partnership Global Director Pablo Vieira: “This contribution underscores the Netherlands’ commitment to scale integrated climate solutions that advance water, food and energy security worldwide. With this additional funding, the NDC Partnership will expand support for country-led climate actions at the nexus of these sectors — supporting the design and implementation of integrated strategies that cut emissions, protect livelihoods and strengthen well-being in the communities most vulnerable to climate impacts.”
