H.E. Minister Marina Silva Assumes Role as Co-Chair of the NDC Partnership
H.E. Minister Marina Silva, Minister of the Environment and Climate Change of Brazil, has assumed the role of Co-Chair of the NDC Partnership, alongside H.E. Minister Lars Aagaard Minister for Climate, Energy and Utilities of Denmark. A prominent politician, environmentalist and advocate for sustainable development, Minister Silva has been a leading voice in environmental protection for decades.
Minister Silva has been instrumental in shaping Brazil’s environmental policies. During her first tenure as minister, she spearheaded the Plan to Prevent and Combat Deforestation in the Amazon (PPCDAm), which contributed to an 83% reduction in deforestation rates and the establishment of 25 million hectares of protected natural areas in the Amazon. A lifelong advocate for environmental protection, she has been recognized internationally, including as one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people in 2024.
“The climate crisis demands that we work together, now more than ever,” said Minister Silva. “The NDC Partnership’s role in mobilizing support for countries to take decisive climate action is crucial. By working together, we can scale up action to improve lives while driving sustainable development and protecting our planet. As a leader in climate action, Brazil is determined to strengthen environmental protections and pave the way for sustainable practices that benefit both people and ecosystems. As Co-Chair of the Partnership, I look forward to working alongside Denmark to rally the support required for rapid climate action.”
With Brazil set to host COP30 in November 2025, the country will play a key role in advancing global climate action. As the current BRICS President, Brazil will focus on fostering cooperation among emerging economies and ensuring that the perspectives and needs of the Global South are integrated into the global response to the climate crisis. Brazil’s role as Co-Chair, representing more than 100 developing countries that are Partnership members will inform their global leadership.
As Co-Chair, Minister Silva will work with Minister Aagaard to guide the NDC Partnership’s efforts in supporting countries to finalize and implement their climate commitments, ensuring that available resources are deployed to enable real change in countries.
