Food, Agriculture, Biodiversity, Land-Use, and Energy (FABLE) Consortium
The FABLE Calculator (FABLE-C) is an open, Excel-based accounting tool that simulates the potential evolution of food and land-use systems from 2000 to 2050. This forward-looking modelling tool allows users to test alternative policy pathways, quantify trade-offs and synergies, and facilitate cross-sector discussions to make decisions that align multiple interventions into coherent, cross-sector strategies. It focuses on agriculture as the main driver of land-use change and tests the impact of policies and drivers through scenarios. It includes 88 raw and processed agricultural products from the crop and livestock sectors. For every 5-year time step, the Calculator computes agricultural activity, land-use change, GHG emissions, food consumption, trade, water use, and biodiversity outcomes.
The FABLE-C was developed by the Food, Agriculture, Biodiversity, Land- Use, and Energy (FABLE) Consortium—a global network of research organizations dedicated to designing long-term food and land-use pathways consistent with global sustainability goals. The Consortium includes country teams in 29 countries that adapt the FABLE-C to national contexts and support governments with evidence for informed decision-making.
