Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) - Low Emissions Agriculture

The International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT).

The overall goal of CCAFS is to “promote a food secure world through the provision of science based efforts that support sustainable agriculture and enhance livelihoods while adapting to climate change and conserving natural resources and environmental services.”
This initiative is a Flagship within CCAFS that seeks to share low emissions agricultural development options, including supporting transformative new practices that promote sustainable intensification and increase production efficiencies for farmers, as well as access to markets for more sustainable products. CCAFS collaborates with global partners and programs such as the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the Global Research Alliance for Agricultural Greenhouse Gases, the Climate and Clean Air Coalition, the Global Alliance for Climate Smart Agriculture, the World Bank, developing country governments, research institutes, universities and international and local non-governmental organizations committed to exploring the potential for low emissions agriculture.

The low-emissions agriculture team collaborates with the CGIAR Research Program on Forests, Trees, and Agroforestry (FTA), Water, Land and Ecosystems (WLE) and the Global Rice Science Partnership (GRiSP).

Organizational and Decision Making Structure

The CCAFS program is made up of the following bodies, each playing a specific governance role:
Independent Science Panel (ISP), with both scientific and development expertise
Lead Center, the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) and its Board
Program Director and a Program Management Committee
A Coordinating Unit, based at the University of Copenhagen and CIAT
Theme Leaders and Regional Program Leaders, who are responsible for aspects of CCAFS implementation
CGIAR Climate Change Contact Points at each CGIAR Center, will help ensure CCAFS is appropriately linked to all Centers and Consortium Research Programs.
