Global Environment Facility (GEF) - Non-Grant Support Program

The GEF aims to help developing countries and economies in transition to contribute to the overall objective of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to mitigate climate change, while enabling sustainable economic development. The GEF funding is intended to cover the incremental costs of a measure to address climate change relative to a business as usual base line. During the GEF-6 cycle, July 2014-June 2018, the GEF put in place a USD 110 million non-grant instruments pilot to demonstrate and validate the application of non-grant financial instruments to combat global environmental degradation. The GEF-6 pilot invested in innovative projects using financial instruments such as risk mitigation products, loans, or equity investments. During the GEF-7 cycle, which started July 2018 and continues through June 2022, the GEF proposes to make available up to USD 136 million for innovative projects that use non-grant instruments covering a full range of environmental challenges, including climate change mitigation. This initiative is part of the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
