The IKI Large Grants address current challenges in climate change mitigation, adaptation to the impacts of climate change and biodiversity conservation every year.
The respective thematic priorities are based on decisions arising from international negotiations conducted under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).
The priority areas also reflect the strategic objectives and geographical focus for the funding programme as outlined in the “Strategy of the International Climate Initiative up to 2030”.
With regard to the geographical orientation, it is planned to integrate specific thematic priorities that strengthen bilateral cooperation with the IKI priority countries.
Depending on the thematic focus, IKI funding per project may range between 5 and 20 million euros.

The projects are assessed and selected by the project management agency and the responsible ministries according to selection criteria, which are outlined in full here.
The selection of ideas for future IKI Large Grants projects takes place in two stages. Promising outlines that have been reviewed and chosen for the proposal stage are requested to submit a detailed project proposal.
A full outline of the proposal phase can be found here.
